Workers’ comp in Louisiana
What Louisiana law requires of employers.
Who it applies to
Louisiana’s Workers’ Compensation Act applies to employees performing services in the course of their employer’s trade, business or occupation. Limited exemptions exist, including certain household and private farm workers whose annual earnings fall under set thresholds, and musicians and performers working under a performance contract.

Owners and officers
A corporate officer who owns at least 10% of the stock, a partner, or a sole proprietor may elect out of the Act by written agreement with the insurer or group self-insurance fund.

Ways to meet the requirement
An employer meets it by insuring with a carrier authorized to write workers’ compensation in Louisiana, joining a group self-insurance fund, joining an interlocal risk management agency, or qualifying with the state to self-insure.
