Fewer carriers write the class at all, which reduces competition and pushes rates up. It is placeable — but it takes a broker working markets that actually have appetite for it, plus clean loss runs and a documented safety program.

Do I need general liability to bid roofing jobs?

General contractors, property managers, and most commercial owners require a certificate of insurance before you set foot on the job, commonly at $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate, and many require additional-insured status and a waiver of subrogation. It depends on the policy. Hot-work operations — torch-down, kettles, and open-flame application — are commonly restricted or excluded on general liability forms, and some carriers decline the risk outright. If you do torch work, tell us up front: it changes which markets we approach and we would rather place it correctly than find the exclusion at claim time.
