What do you need for a certificate of insurance?

The certificate holder’s name and address and the requirement page from the contract. If the contract asks for endorsements such as additional insured or a waiver of subrogation, tell us before the policy is bound.

Why did my workers compensation premium change at audit?

Workers compensation is payroll-rated: the premium billed at the start of the term is an estimate, and the carrier trues it up once the year closes. Payroll higher than projected, work that landed in a more expensive class code than quoted, or subcontractor cost absorbed into your payroll will each move the final number.

I only use subcontractors. What do you need from me?

A certificate of insurance from every sub, kept on file. At audit, a sub who cannot produce one is commonly treated as your payroll, and you are charged for them. Collecting subcontractor certificates is one of the cheapest premium controls available to a general contractor.

Do you work with contractors outside Louisiana?

Certificate of insurance.

A certificate of insurance is the page an owner, lender, or general contractor requires before you step on the job. It lists the policies on the account, the limits, and the certificate holder. It is evidence of insurance, not the policy itself.

Additional insured, primary and noncontributory, and waiver of subrogation print on the certificate only when those endorsements are already on the policy.
