It is the plumbing trade’s most frequent claim, so underwriters rate a plumber on it: loss runs, the kind of buildings you work in, and your practices.

I do soldering and torch work. Does that matter for the quote?

Yes. Hot work is a recognized fire exposure, and some carriers ask about procedures such as fire watch before they will quote it. Since most plumbers do some torch work, tell us your practices up front. It determines which markets can quote it.

Does new construction cost more to insure than service work?

Usually it is rated differently rather than simply costing more. New-construction plumbing is underwritten on the size and contractual terms of the projects, while service and repair puts you inside occupied buildings with more frequent, smaller claims. Carrier appetite splits along that line, so we ask for your revenue mix. It drives both classification and which markets will compete for the account.
